Profile
I like photographs. Pretty simple really - I think we all do in a weird way. I decided a long time ago when I was a kid that I REALLY liked photographs, and decided I'd quite like to take lots and lots of them.
I started out when I was really wee with a plastic SupaSnaps Cow-Cam. I then picked up digital cameras pretty early in the game, used and abused a couple of digital point-and-shoots for a few years, then in 2007, began my first "serious" forays into photography after winning a prize at work and buying a Fuji S6500. About the same time, I began on my film perversions with my Dad's OM10 and a Polaroid One600, then moved on to a used Nikon D70S. The old and well-worn D70 did a good job, but eventually succumbed to my abuse, being replaced by the D700 when I left BT.
I love absorbing the world around me through my lens, as well as poking fun at it and picking up on its quirkier sides. There's a special fascination for me in those places and moments where logic and sense have broken down to create singularities of unpredictability and unconscious subversion among the high-gloss images fed to us on a daily basis. I see great beauty in mis-spelt signs, abandoned fridges and unlocked gates.
I've shot in some fun places. I've donned a gas mask and clambered around star-trek-esque volcanic islands. I've cleaned sweat and beer from my UV filter while being deafened by walls of amplifiers. I've cleaned Pacific Ocean waves from my UV filter while hanging out with Penguins. I've even taken photos in Fife.

I believe that the main most important bit of gear that you use for any image is your brain - your eyes help quite a lot too. That said, some good functional gear can be a big advantage. I use Nikon equipment mostly, not because I think they're better than Canons or anything like that, but just because they feel right in my hands, and always just seem to work the way I need them to.
The D700 has been a bit of a god-send for me - allowing me to work in very very low light conditions and still create punchy images at very high quality. My choice in lenses has (mostly) been chosen for low-light performance, and low-weight portability. The SB-600 flashgun's great, especially nowadays that I can use it when I want to, not when I have to. The FM body's pretty handy, in that it works with most of my AF lenses, and of course my old 50mm Ai-S can work smoothly on the D700 body should I need it to do so.
